IRENE HAYES LINDSAY


Irene Hayes Lindsay died Friday at Kennebec Longterm Care, after a long illness.

She was born in Leeds Junction, a daughter of Maude Gowan Hayes and Edward John Hayes, and graduated from Edward Little High School in Auburn in 1922. She received her registered nursing degree from Maine General Hospital (now Maine Medical Center) in 1930, and did further study in public health nursing at Simmons College in Boston. Mrs. Lindsay worked as an operating room supervisor at the Knox County Hospital in Rockland, as well as the Hale Hospital in Haverhill, Mass. She was also night supervisor at Maine General Hospital from 1932 to 1934. Her career took her into public health nursing in and around Ashfield, Mass.

For the past several years, she had been involved in work for the Central Maine Agency on Aging, Senior Spectrum, Maine State Museum and RSVP.

Her husband, Albert H. Lindsay, and two sons, Howard Hayes Lindsay and Christopher Gowan Lindsay, all died previously.

She is survived by two grandsons, Howard C. Lindsay and Jonathan H. Lindsay; and a niece, Nancy Reed Sulides.

Spring burial will be in Glenside Cemetery in Winthrop. Arrangements are by the Roberts Funeral Home, 26 Bowdoin St., Winthrop.
