CARL V. RICE
1902-1999

WINTHROP -
Carl V. Rice, 96, of Pembroke, died Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 5, at the Nicholson Nursing Home, following a long illness.

Born in Pembroke, Dec. 8, 1902, the son of Ezra K. and Lillie M. Batron Rice, he was educated in the schools of Pembroke.

On July 26, 1926, Mr. Rice married the former Gertrude A Stolte and she died in June of 1980.

He was a self-employed carpenter all his life, retiring in 1982. He was member of the Pembroke Grange, Washington County Grange 16, was past member of the Pembroke Historical Society and taught square dancing for several years.

Mr. Rice was known in the neighborhood as the good samaritan of Pembroke. He also enjoyed the interest of hunting.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Ted (Carol R.) Johnson of Monmouth; three sons, George V. of Machias; James B. and his wife, Sandra, of Lynn, Mass.; and William H. of Pembroke; one sister, Marian Barrett of Pembroke; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Samuel; and a sister, Celia Longfellow.
