James Ross Jr., 72, a well-known resident of Tel Road, died Saturday evening, Jan. 6, 2001, at the Albany Medical Center following a brief illness.

He was born Nov. 19, 1928, in Bellows Falls, son of James Ross Sr. and Edna (Sawin) Ross. He received his education in Bellows Falls, and later attended an electronics school in the Boston area.

Mr. Ross served in the U.S. Air Force from 1947-55.

He married the former Helen Grignon Hutt on Dec. 2, 1968, in Chester. They moved to Bennington in 1969 when Mr. Ross began working for Better T.V., Colony Communications and Adelphia Cable, from which he retired in 1994.

Mr. Ross was an active member of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church. He served as president of the parish council, and also served on the worship and spirituality committee, building and grounds, and along with his wife was active in the R.C.I.A. program. For the last few years, he had served as an acolyte of the church.

He was also a member of the Bennington Elks Lodge #567, BROC, the United Way and the Bennington Area Chamber of Commerce. He was also an active member of the Bennington Rotary Club where he served in many capacities. He was a past president and past district governor. He worked for many years on the Bennington Rotary Antique Car Show and the pancake breakfast. He also edited the Bennington Rotary monthly magazine, "The Windmill."

Survivors include his wife, Helen Ross of Bennington; a son, Franklin Hutt of Buffalo, S.C.; two daughters, Kathleen Hutt of Queensbury, N.Y., and Dorothy Breon of Epsom, N.H.; a brother, Robert Ross of Bethel, Conn.; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. with a prayer and then from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 11 a.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered.

Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. The vigil service will be offered Tuesday afternoon. The burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.
