DOUGLAS -
Geraldine F. (Hall) Baia, 88, of 36 Birch Hill Road, a former messenger, died Thursday in Beaumont Nursing Center, Northbridge, after a long illness.

Her husband, Louis V. Baia, died in 1977. She leaves three sons, Vincent Baia of Florida, William Baia of Lowell and Louis V. Baia Jr. of Watertown; four daughters, Geraldine Cecere of Westchester County, N.Y., Louise Prevete, Anne Antonelli and Margaritte Meredith, all of Salem, N.H.; two brothers, Irwin Hall of Denver and Francis Hall of Quincy; a sister, Mary Hall of Dracut; 39 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A daughter, Marie M. Forget of Douglas, died in 1997.

She was born in Brookline, daughter of Irwin and Kate (Freese) Hall, and later lived in Brighton. She lived 18 years in Douglas and 12 years in Northbridge.

During World War II, she was a messenger at the Watertown Arsenal.

Mrs. Baia taught rug braiding for many years. She also created ceramics and wrote poetry. She was an enthusiastic gardener.

She was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church, the Douglas Grange, the Douglas Senior Citizens and the Wallum Lake Terrace Beach Association.

A memorial service will be held at 12:45 p.m. Monday in Jackman Funeral Home, 7 Mechanic St. Burial will be private in Fairview Cemetery, Hyde Park. Calling hours are 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Eastern Massachusetts, 36 Cameron Ave., Cambridge, MA 02140.
