Golden Anniversary is Celebrated

AUBURN -
A recent golden wedding anniversary celebration honoring Roscoe and Lenora Clifford was attended by more than 80 friends and relatives at their home at 95 Davis Ave.

Arrangements were made by their children and spouses, Glendon and Susan Clifford of North Amity; Richard and Lois Lavoie of Merrimack, N.H.; and William and Sharon Gray of Windham.

The anniversary cake, decorated by their daughter, Susan Gray, was topped with the same gold ornament that had been used in 1965 on the 50th anniversary cake of his parents, Raymond and Monona Clifford.

The couple were married June 25, 1941, in Leeds at the home of her parents, Harry and Edna Addition Lindsay.

Mrs. Clifford graduated from Leavitt Institute in 1935 and from Bliss Business College in 1938 and taught for three years in the Maine high schools of Brooklin and Bridgton. She is a member of the Auburn United Methodist Church.

Mr. Clifford graduated from Edward Little High School in 1936 and served as Auburn city engineer, Auburn city planner and highway superintendent and as city manager of Calais. He retired in 1978 from his position as superintendent of grounds and services of the University of Maine, Orono. He is a member of Tranquil Lodge and Kora Temple and a former member of the Auburn Exchange Club, the Old Town Rotary Club and the University of Maine Credit Union.

Guests were present from Lewiston, Auburn, Saco, Portland, Cape Elizabeth, Bangor, Windham, Cundy's Harbor, Amity, Gardiner, Portland, Sabattus, Greene, Leeds; and Merrimack and Rochester, N.H.

Roscoe L. Clifford

Roscoe L. Clifford, 75, of 95 David Ave., died Thursday morning at his home after a long illness.

He was born in Auburn, September 2, 1918, the son of Raymond and Monona Bailey Clifford and graduated from Edward Little High School in 1936.

One June 25, 1941, he married the former Lenora Lindsay.

During World War II, he served in the Army Corps of Engineers from 1943 to 1945. He worked for the city of Auburn from 1947 to 1961 serving as city engineer, tax assessor, building inspector and interim city manager. From 1961 to 1964, he was the city manager for Calais. In 1964, he became the superintendent of grounds and services at the University of Maine at Orono until retiring in 1978.

Mr. Clifford was a 40 year member of Tranquil Lodge A.F. & A.M., a member of Lewiston Lodge of Perfection, Auburn Council, Princes of Jerusalem, H.H. Dickey, Chapter of Rose Croix, Maine Consistory Valley of Portland, and Kora Temple of Lewiston. He served as president of the East Auburn Community Unit, was a member of the Auburn Exchange Club, and had been a member of the Calais and Old Town Rotary Clubs.

He was an avid bridge player and enjoyed landscaping and gardening.

He is survived by his wife of Auburn; two daughters, Lois Lavoie of Merrimack, N.H., and Sharon Gray of Windham; one son, Glendon Clifford of Amity; a sister, Doris Sansbury of Auburn; and six grandchildren and one great-grandson. He was predeceased by a brother, Arthur Clifford of Alderwood Manor, Wash.
