Death of Prominent Citizen J.G. Gott

Monmouth, Nov. 17 -
Joseph G. Gott passed away at his home Sunday morning after a long illness and much suffering.

Mr. Gott was born in Leeds and moved to Monmouth in the fall of 1876. At an early age he began to teach and was successfully employed in that way every winter for a number of years. In 1870, he represented his townsmen in the legislature. He has held the office of town clerk and for eight years was on the school board of Monmouth and for a period of twenty-five years he was superintendent of the Congregational Sunday School. He was deacon of the Congregational church when he died, having served fifteen or more years in that capacity.

He married Rose S. [sic] Stinchfield of Leeds.

He leaves besides a widow, two children, Mrs. Harry H. Cochrane and Mrs. William Edwards of Augusta, who were with him when he passed away. Mr. Gott was a kind neighbor, ever thoughtful of those around him, and his loss will be deeply felt in the community.

The funeral will be held from the Congregational church Wednesday. Rev. G.E. Whiden, the pastor of the church, will officiate, assisted by Rev. H.L. Nichols of Skowhegan and Rev. C.I. Spear.
