The Decree of Death: Levi Lindsey Embarks with the Silent Boatman

The Times must chronicle the death of another citizen who resided for many years in Iroquois County and for almost a quarter of a century in Watseka. Levi Lindsey was born in Augusta, Maine, Sep 22, 1816 and spent his boyhood days in Leeds in his native state. Afterward he moved to Abbington, Massachusetts, where, on Dec 1, 1840 he was united in marriage to Mary Whitmarsh. In about 1854 Mr. Lindsey, with his family, immigrated to Iroquois County, Illinois, and during the succeeding thirty-eight years he has been a resident of this county, the last twenty-four years of his life being spent at Watseka where he was known and esteemed by all.

But time brings to all the unalterable decree of Death and after an illness of nine days, at 10:20 p.m. on Dec. 22, 1892, Levi Lindsey bid adieu to his friends and another pioneer of Iroquois County embarked with the silent boatman for those shores beyond the dark river. A widow and five children, three sons and two daughters, mourn his departure. Only two of the children reside in this county; Ira Lindsey of Watseka and Mrs. Scott Yates of Pittwood. The others reside in distant state but the daughter, Mrs. Alfred Troup of Minnestoa, arrived in time to be present at the funeral. The services were held at the Christian church last Sunday, Rev. S. Light officiating and the body borne to its long repose in Oak Hill Cemetery.
