Bowen Rites Held Here Today


Funeral services for Mrs. Bertha Bowen, widow of Homer Bowen, were held this afternoon at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. The Rev. J.L. Hansen, rector, conducted the service. Burial was in Grand Island Cemetery.

Pallbearers were R.E. Stephens, A.J. Luebs, Clinton E. Cronin, Arch W. Jarrell, A.E. Hackman and Fred Housman.

Mrs. Bowen died Saturday afternoon in a local hospital. She had been in failing health for some time and had been confined at the hospital the last month. The family home is at 1104 West Division.

Mrs. Bowen was born August 26, 1874, at Delrey, Ill. to Jonathan and Adelaid Lindsay Brown. When she was an infant, the family came westward and settled near Peabody, Kan.

Mrs. Bowen was making her home with a sister in Cody, Wyo. when she met Mr. Bowen. They were married in Cody in March of 1912.

Two years later Mr. and Mrs. Bowen came to Grand Island to make their home. Mr. Bowen was a Grand Island druggist and was actively engaged in the practice of his profession at the time of his death in 1943.

Mrs. Bowen was well known in Grand Island and was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. She was affiliated with the Eastern Star in Omaha and with the Grand Island Women's Club.

She is survived by her only daughter, Mrs. James Bost of Grand Island; two grandchildren, Mrs. Fred Daly of Coronado, Calif. and Miss Jane Bost, who attends the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, and by more distant relatives.

Besides her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Agnes Chamberlain, and an infant brother.
