Dr. Burnahm E. Sewell

LINCOLN -
Dr. Burnham E. Sewell, 82, died Feb. 26, 1979, at his home. He was born June 28, 1896, in Hartland, N.B., the son of Malcolm B. and Carrie (Smith) Sewell.

At the age of six years, he and his family moved to Houlton, Maine, where he attended public schools and graduated from Ricker Classical Institute in 1917. He graduated from Tufts Dental College in 1922 and was a member of the Delta Sigma fraternity and the RRA Honor Society. He opened 1922 [sic], where he practiced dentisty for 50 years, retiring in 1972.

He was a member of the Penobscot Valley Dental Society, life member of the Maine Dental Association, and a member of the American Dental Association. He was a member of the Horeb Lodge No. 93 AF and AM of Lincoln and served as its master in 1938; a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies and Maine Consistory of Portland; 32nd degree AASR, also of Portland; a life member of Anah Temple Mystic Shrine and Northern Penobscot Shrine Club, a member and past patron of Lincoln Chapter No. 112, OES of Lincoln, and past grand patron of the Grand Chapter of Maine, OES. He was instrumental in organizing the Rainbow for Girls in Lincoln and served on the advisory board for 25 years. He also served as their Rainbow Dad. He was a member and past president of the Lincoln Rotary Club and former member and past president of the Lincoln Lions Club. He was a member of the First Congregational Church UCC of Lincoln, a deacon and also a member of the Men's Club.

He is survived by his wife, Willa (Stewart) Sewell of Lincoln; two, Mrs. Robert (Mary Carolyn) Bacon of Hampden, Mrs. Fletcher W. (Florence) Lindsay of Portland; five grandchildren, Judith Bacon Williams of Burlington, Vt., George Sewell Bacon of Bangor, Fletcher W. Lindsay, II, Brian Sewell Lindsay, and Sandra Jean Lindsey, all of Portland.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m at the Barton Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Dartnell and Rev. John Larkin officiating. Spring burial will be in the Lincoln Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 8 p.m.. In lieu of flowers, friends who wish may contribute in his memory to the Shrine Hospital for Crippled Children. Donations may be left at the funeral home.
