Allen James Hendricks
May 27,1927-March 8, 2005

STANFIELD -- Allen James Hendricks, 77, of Stanfield, died Tuesday, March 8, 2005 at Stanfield.

At his request, there will be no funeral service. Disposition was by cremation.

Mr. Hendricks was born May 27, 1927, in Orange Township, Minn., to William and Anne Hendricks.

He was a retired Union Pacific Railroad man.

After raising their children in Spokane, Mr. Hendricks and his wife moved to Stanfield in 1980 during a job transfer.

He had many hobbies including woodworking, lathe turning, hunting/fishing, playing pool with his friends and family, and overnight journeys on the Columbia River with his son on a pontoon boat. He was also a ferocious reader and enjoyed surfing the Internet in attempts to satisfy his endless curiosity. It was said that perhaps his greatest gift was his sense of humor. He was a natural joke teller and rarely repeated the same joke twice.

His most prized possessions, were his love for his wife, Irene, and for his family.

He had worked graveyard shifts for the railroad and then worked part-time jobs roofing, siding and remodeling houses during the day to help pay expenses and build a retirement. After working hard all day, he still had the energy to spend time with his family when he returned home.

While raising his family, Mr. Hendricks built a lake cabin at Badger Lake near Cheney, Wash. from used lumber. Every weekend during several summers, he would take his family to the lake cabin for camping, recreation and fun and take a load of used lumber with which he slowly finished the cabin. Many relatives and friends spent weekends at the lake cabin due to his efforts.

In the late 1970's Mr. Hendricks and his wife, Irene, stayed with their son, Jim, in a small fishing village in the Eastern Caribbean while Jim was a Peace Corps Volunteer. Mr. Hendricks became a legend in the village after children witnessed him catching a huge fish on a single fishing line and with no fishing pole. Children in the village followed him like the pied piper as he walked throughout the village. Also, during his walks, he would stop at street vendors to buy the kids candies and goodies.

Mr. Hendricks volunteered countless hours building shelving, tables and other furniture for the Moose Lodge in Stanfield.

Survivors include his children, Jim, of Kennewick, and Renee and David, both of Spokane, his sisters, Avon Card of Bremerton, Wash., Linda Waite, and Julie Hendricks and his brother, Steve Hendricks, grandchildren, Karen Hendricks and Jim Hendricks, numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Anne Hendricks, by his wife, Irene, and by a sister, Geraldine Ehrhard.
