Skerpan Named Research Consultant


History professor Alfred A. Skerpan, a specialist on Soviet affairs, has been appointed special consultant for research projects on Soviet capabilities conducted by the federal government.

Named to the Special Operations Research office at American university in Washington, D. C. Prof. Skerpan's duties will include analysis and criticism of reports on Russian strength being gathered in special studies. He will continue as a full-time member of the Kent State faculty. As a member of the Office of Strategic Services during World War II, Professor Skerpan headed on OSS mission doing liason work with British intelligence agencies in London. Before coming to Kent State in 1946, he served one year as a research analyst with the U. S. State department.

Professor Skerpan received his bachelor of arts degree from Harvard university and his master of arts and doctor ot philosophy degrees from Yale university. In 1954, he did advanced research under a Fulbright grant at the University of Helsinki, Finland. He has also done special studies at Columbia university. He has made several tours of Europe, including a visit to the Soviet Union in Fall of 1957. Professor Skerpan will speak at today's Great Contemporary Issues lecture on the subject of "The Heavenly Kingdom of 20th Century Communism." The lecture will be held in 114 Van D at 3 p.m. It is open to the public.
