Wilbur A. Kelley

Wilbur A. Kelley, 87, of West Hartford, husband of Phyllis (Penley) Kelley, died Friday (November 12, 2010) at John Dempsey Hospital in Farmington surrounded by his family.

Born in Hartford, he was a son of the late Wilbur S. and Ruth (Brown) Kelley. Wilbur graduated from Hartford High School and Hillyer College and served with the U.S. Army in Europe and Northern Africa during World War II. At a dance held at Immanuel Congregational Church in Hartford shortly after the war, he met Phyllis, the love of his life. They married in 1947 and made West Hartford their home.

Wilbur began his career in the Credit Department of Brown Thompson before taking a position with New Britain General Hospital and finally Hartford Hospital, where he served as the Financial Officer, retiring after 25 years. Through his position at work, he was always ready to seek out solutions to ease the financial burden of patients in need.

He and Phyllis travelled extensively all over the world but Cape Cod was special to him. With the exception of his years in the Army, Wilbur spent time at the Cape every year of his life and delighted in sharing it with his friends and family. He was an active member of the First Church of Christ Congregational in West Hartford and a previous member of The Old Guard, West Hartford Civitan, and the Wyllys-St. John's Lodge #4.

Besides Phyllis, his wife of 63 years, he leaves two children, Linda Winchester and her husband Edward of West Hartford, and Paul Kelley of Vernon; four grandchildren Justin Winchester, Tyler Kelley, Elizabeth Kelley, and Tanner Kelley; and three great-grandchildren, Mia, Lola, and Bode Kelley.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday (November 19, 2010), at the Chapel of First Church of Christ Congregational, 12 South Main Street, West Hartford with the Reverend Barbara Frey officiating. Burial at Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Hartford Hospital or First Church of Christ Congregational.
