CARY, ROBERT WAYNE SR., 73

CARY, ROBERT WAYNE SR., 73, of Barre Town, died November 5 at the Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin. His family was at his bedside. Born April 19, 1935, in Bangor, Maine, he was the son of George and Hazel (Sturgeon) Cary and had attended schools there. He was first married to Lillian Harkins and they had a son, Robert W. Cary Jr. They later divorced. On June 18, 1977, he married Doreen Kay Beck in the Barre Universalist Church. Most of their married life had been spent at their current address. A veteran of the United States Air Force, Bob served from June, 16, 1955, to Nov. 30, 1956. From 1977 to 1987 he owned and managed the former Parking Lot Restaurant in Barre and from 1987 to 1991 operated the Camp Meade Restaurant in Middlesex and was well-known for his excellent meals. He retired from this endeavor because of declining health. A well-known joker, he had built an outhouse at Gusto's Petticoat Junction and later put a toilet and dummy on the roof of the Central Market with a sign "Yankees looking for a pennant." When the Red Sox lost the pennant he was pictured eating a "Reggie Bar." His memberships included Barre American Legion Post #10 and the Barre Elks Lodge #1535. He had been an active fund raiser for the Barre Youth Sports Association and the Jaws of Life Program in the Barre area. Besides his wife Doreen, survivors include his son, Robert W. Cary Jr. and wife Joy of Huntington; four beloved grandchildren; a stepdaughter, Sandra Stevens and a stepson, George Bailey. Also surviving are three brothers George, Ronald and Patrick Cary; a sister, Opal Townsend, and nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was predeceased by a sister, Colleen Sites, and two brothers, Larry and Keith Cary.
