MANCHESTER --
Ralph Edward Sylvester, 92, passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 27, 2010, surrounded by his family following a brief stay at the Maine Veterans' Home, Augusta.

He was born Dec. 18, 1917, in Greene, the 12th child and a son of the late Stephen Ruggles Sylvester and Mabel Carver Sylvester.

He graduated from Leavitt Institute, Turner in 1937. He went to welding school nights and worked at Bath Iron Works Shipyard until enlisting in the Navy Sept. 2, 1943. He served as a 3rd class gunner's mate aboard the heavy cruiser USS St. Paul, involved in action in the Pacific Ocean, and was honorably discharged in May, 1946.

He operated a sawmill and lumber business until 1970 when he formed the R.E. Sylvester & Son, Inc. excavating business, retiring in 1987. Son Brian continues the business as Sylvester Excavating, Inc.

He married Beverly Stockford July 16, 1949, and together they had five children. Beverly passed away July 22, 1981. He was also predeceased by infant daughter Deanna in 1951.

He is survived by son Brian (Debra) Sylvester of Manchester and three daughters: Jane (James) Kemmerer of Holderness, N.H., Deborah (Timothy) Jackson of Monmouth and Susan Sylvester Murphy, Winthrop. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren: Nathan Sylvester and his wife, Nicky Mathieu, of Hallowell, Kara (Ravi) Sylvester Kaikini of Freeport, Erin (Ben) Tirone Sturtz of Portland, Ore., Michael Tirone, originally from Holderness, N.H., Emily (Dale) Tirone Abbott of Northwood, N.H., Tori Lee Jackson and her husband, Michael French, of Wayne, Hannah (David) Jackson Hall of Durham, Heidi (Luke) Jackson McDonald of Mount Vernon, Tyler Jackson of Portland, Derek Gauthier of Winthrop, Ashley Hamilton and her partner, Patrick Ellis, of Chelsea and Brock Hamilton of Farmingdale; two stepgrandsons, Charles Kemmerer and his fianc้e, Ginny Chu, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Eli (Christina) Kemmerer of Baltimore. He had five great-grandchildren: Webber Sylvester, Lilah Hall, Logan Abbott, Peyton McDonald, Beckett Hall and was awaiting a great-granddaughter due in the fall.

In 1982, Ralph married Gloria Hamblen Kenney Sylvester, who survives. They enjoyed their winter home in Zephyrhills, Fla., and attended Zephyr Christian Church.

Burial will be at Glenside Cemetery.
