Melville B. Tinkham, 63, of 91 Dartmouth St., represented by Judge Elton H. Fales, paid a fine of $100 and costs of $17.18 on costs of a tipsy driving charge. Another charge against him, that of operating a motor vehicle with inadequate brakes, was filed by court recorder Nelson M.J. Peters on recommendation of County Attorney Edward J. Beauchamp.

Former Checker Champion Dies at Auburn Home

Melville B. Tinkham, 83, of 91 West Dartmouth St., Auburn, died Wednesday morning at his home after a long illness.

He was born at South Monmouth, June 16, 1891, the son of Algene F. and Martha J. Brewster Tinkham and had been a resident of Auburn most of his life. He was a graduate of the Monmouth Academy in 1909. He married the former Beatrice Wren-Hardy of Lewiston in 1936.

He once played in the world checker championship tourney and was considered an expert in the game and was, until he died, the Maine State checker champion. He is also the Androscoggin checker champion. He was a retired weaver from the Hill Mill.

He is survived by his wife of Auburn and two sisters, Florence Tinkham, and Mrs. Lillian Gallagher, both of Lewiston.

TINKHAM -- in Auburn, April 2, 1975, Mr. Melville B. Tinkham, age 83 of 91 West Dartmouth Street, Auburn. Funeral services will be attended at the Teague & Jenkins Funeral Home, 391 Main St., Lewiston, Saturday April 5 at 11 a.m. Entombment will be at the Mt. Auburn Cemetery with burial to take place there in the spring. Friends and realtives may call at Teague & Jenkins Thursday and Friday afternoons and evenings from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9.
