Mr. Edwin Arthur Emerson, Jr.

NORWAY --
Edwin Arthur Emerson, Jr., 67 of Norway died Saturday, August 29, 1998 at the Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway after a 14 month illness with cancer.

Born at South Paris on October 21, 1930, the son of Edwin A. and Vera Merrill Emerson, he attended local schools and graduated from Norway High School in 1948.

Mr. Emerson was active on the football team, and as president of the Future Farmers of America. His farming business started with one cow in a FFA school project. After high school, Edwin learned the dairy business from his uncle George Emerson, and purchased his parents' farm in Yagger neighborhood, Norway.

He won the Norway award for outstanding farmer of the year from the Junior Chamber of Commerce. The business expanded from 18 milking cows and a pick-up truck to his own retail milk route with a processing plant.

In 1960, he purchased the Waterford Creamery and operated Emerson's Dairy there until the creamery burned in 1970. During this time he also raised and harvested Christmas trees.

He purchased ABC Rubbish in 1968, and moved his business and home to the former Lester Wiley place on Route 118 in Norway a few years later. There he operated Emerson Enterprises, a used car agency, an auto body repair shop, and a maintenance garage for his garbage trucks and tractor trailer trucks. Eventually, Mr. Emerson ran a honey and pollination business with 450 hives, and also sold real estate.

He was a past master and active member of Norway Grange for over fifty years, as well as being involved in Oxford Pomona, Maine State Grange, and National Grange. He was a member of the I.O.O.F., Past President of Wildly Encampment, Past Chief Ruler of Norway Pine Tree Junior Lodge, Past President of Norway High School Alumni Association, and an active member of the Christmas Tree Association throughout New England.

Mr. Emerson was an avid boxing fan and was proud to have been present at the famous Sonny Liston fight in Lewiston many years ago. Also, he thoroughly enjoyed the high school class reunions and the alumni associations reunions and always tried to attend.
His happiest times were at family get-togethers, hearing and telling family stories. He was interested in family history and loved new babies being added to the family.

He is survived by his companion, Jennifer Jones Parsons of Mechanic Falls, and her daughter, Stephanie Foster, who lives in Minot with her husband Rene.

Other survivors include his children, Donna Lynn Emerson of Lewiston, Betty (Elizabeth Ann Emerson) Quick of Oxford, Nancy (Emerson) Graiver and her husband David of Woodstock, George and his wife Cathy (Scribner) Emerson of South Paris, Beth (Henley) Frost of Naples, Randall and his wife Barbara (Alling) Henley of Waterford, Alden and his wife Julie (Grover) Emerson of Norway, Edwin A. Emerson III and his companion Pam Deschambeault of Saco, and Marcia Emerson of Portland; two sisters Clara (Emerson) Eckard of Daytona Beach, FL, and Mary Emerson of Richmond, Maine; one brother, Robert Emerson of Bartlett, NH, his former wife and friend, Joanne Everett; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his wife of 20 years, Dorothy (Woodworth) Emerson.

A memorial service was held today, September 2,. at the Deering Memorial Methodist Church on Main St., South Paris. Immediately following there was a gathering at the Norway Grange on Whitman St., Norway.
