Vera A. Emerson
NORWAY - Vera Althea Emerson, 78, died Friday at her home.
She was born in North Norway, Aug. 9, 1913, the daughter of Oliver and Virginia (Hamlin) Merrill. She graduated from Norway High School with the class of 1930.
A lifelong resident of Norway, she had worked in local shoe factories. She was a member of the Universalist Unitarian Church in Norway, serving on the board of trustees. She also had taught Sunday school at the church.
On March 1, 1930, she married Edwin A. Emerson. He died on Aug. 11, 1987.
She was a member of the Clara Barton Guild, the Farm Bureau, Norway Grange 45 and held the chair of Ceres and Flora. She was past president of the Norway Women's Club and a life member of the Waterford Historical Society, the Norway Historical Society and the Mount Hope Rebekah Lodge 58.
She initiated the Rool Shed art exhibit and was instrumental in organizing the sidewalk art shows on Main Street in Norway. She taught adult education classes for local artists in the area. Mrs. Emerson worked for 10 years as a real estate broker and at age 71, she climbed Mount Washington for the first time.
She was active in the Democratic Party and was on the state committee for women. She also served as president of the Oral History Society of Norway.
Survivors include two sons, Edwin A. Emerson, Jr. of Norway and Robert O. Emerson of Dennisport, Mass.; two daughters, Mrs. Richard (Clara) Eckard of Daytona Beach, Fla. and Mary A. Emerson of Iowa Falls, Iowa; 15 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
EMERSON -- Died in Norway, March 20, 1992, Vera A. Emerson, age 78, of Yagger Rd., Norway. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. at the time of Raymond Funeral Home, 119 Main St., Norway, with the Rev. Herbert Adams of the Universalist Unitarian Church officiating. Interment will be in the Merrill Cemetery, North Norway, in the spring. There will be no visiting hours. Donations in Mrs. Emerson's memory may be sent to the American Cancer Society, Box 456, Brunswick 04011.
