GLENACE C. HANSCOM

LINCOLN --
Glenace C. Hanscom, 85, died Jan. 25, 1997, at a Lincoln hospital after a courageous seven year battle with cancer.

She was born in Springfield July 12, 1911, the oldest daughter of Lyndon and Lillian (Downs) Cole. She married Lewis H. Hanscom in 1934 and was his devoted wife until his death in 1981. She was an elementary teacher for 43 years in schools in the area, retiring from the Millinocket school system in 1971. She was a member of the National Education Association, Maine Teachers Association, Maine Association of Retired Teachers, and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a 50 year plus member of Dobsis Chapter O.E.S. and Pine Grove Chapter O.E.S. She attended Springfield and Lincoln Congregational churches and was a member of Mattawamkeag and Lincoln Senior Citizens.

She is survived by one daughter, Althea and her husband, Hugh Hamlin of Caribou; one sister, Ava Linscott of Springfield; two grandsons, Jeffrey and his wife, Corina Hamlin of Brownville, Jon and his wife, Denise of Caribou; one granddaughter, Nancy Hamlin, and her husband Timothy Cowett of Caribou; seven great grandchildren, Theresa, Jon and Nanci Hamlin of Brownville, Nicole, Courtney and Sara Hamlin of Caribou, and Alexis Cowett of Caribou; two sisters-in-law, Florence Seavey of Etna and Tena Cole of Lincoln; several nieces and nephews; a special neighbor, Beverly Pelkey; and many wonderful friends and neighbors. She was pre-deceased by a great-grandson, Michael Jeffrey Hamlin; and a brother, Harland Cole.

She treasured the many former students who took the time to visit and chat with her, both in her home and casually around Lincoln. She took great pride in her teaching career and continued to support educational careers for her grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and others. She will be missed for her genuine love and concern for her family, her ready smile and delightful laugh, her love of reading to children, her enjoyment of eating out, her courage when her memory failed her, and so much more. She gave her love and support to those she loved readily and without questions. She has left a warm spot in the hearts of many. At her request there will be no funeral or graveside services. It was her wish that her family and friends would honor her memory and her lifetime commitment to youth and education through donations to the Glenace Hanscom Scholarship Fund, care of Lee Academy, Lee 04455.
