MR. PHILLIP D. ATKINS, AUBURN

After a long illness Mr Phillip D. Atkins, an aged man living on North Main street, Auburn, died at half past six o'clock on Monday evening.

Mr. Atkins was a resident of Dixfield but had lived in Lewiston and Auburn at different times for some years and was a familiar character about the streets.

He served in the Civil War and was ever ready with a series of stories of his experience and his war record.

He was a tall man of large build, with shoulders slightly bent. His hair was gray and hung well down over his coat collar. He generally wore a heavy muffler tied about his throat and always walked slowly and with the aid of a cane. His health had been poor for a great many years and this fall he had rapidly failed.

His wife's former name was Haines, widow of George Haines, the old time awning maker. She was a familiar figure.

Mr. Atkins has been a great expounder of his troubles due to his sufferings and has been failing constantly for a year or more.

Mr. Atkins leaves a wife and three sons, Fred O. of Waterville, Calvin N. of Newport, Me. and Edward O. of Bath.

(Lucinda Gray was born 20 May 1833 in Starks, Somerset County, Maine,²⁶⁹ died 23 October 1916 in Auburn, Androscoggin County, Maine ²⁵² and was buried 26 October 1916 in Wilton, Franklin County, Maine ²⁵².) The cause of her death was pneumonia.

Philip next married Clarinda M.C. Emery, daughter of Alexander Emery and Margaretta [--?--], 1 April 1863 in Waldo, Waldo County, Maine.⁶⁴⁷⁷ The marriage ended in divorce in October 1873. (Clarinda M.C. Emery was born about 1849 in Maine.)

Philip next married Mrs. Alfareta Carter 29 April 1878 in Augusta, Kennebec County, Maine.⁶⁴⁷⁸ (Mrs. Alfareta Carter was born about 1848 in Maine.)

Philip next married Margaret Morgan 27 December 1886 in Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts.⁶⁴⁷⁹ (Margaret Morgan was born about 1859.)
