Mary Anne (Hatleberg) McHugh passed away early Saturday morning, after a long illness with Alzheimer's disease. She was born in Chicago, on May 21st.

An actress since the age of five, her career included many roles for all local theatre groups. She was one of four founders for Children's Theatre of Madison in 1967. She had a one woman show for 6 years as Mary Todd Lincoln, a TV show by the name of Theodore Bear and Co., and was in the movie, The Islanders. Her favorite role was that of Piglet, which took her all over the world and into many schools. In 1952, she married the love of her life, Roger Thomas McHugh. They stayed in Madison, and raised their family. She was a truly loving mother and devoted friend.

In addition to her acting she loved cooking and entertaining. She was involved in many organizations such as Delta Gamma, Zeta Phi Eta, CTM, DAR, League of Women Voters and Panhellenic. She was also an English, speech and drama teacher, as well as an assistant editor for Seventeen Magazine in New York City. She also enjoyed co-owning Cabrini Gifts on Monroe Street for many years.

Mary Anne was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Thomas McHugh; father, C.B. Hatleberg; mother, Helen (Larrabee) Hatleberg; brother, James Hetleberg; and mother-in-law, Marian (Mortimur) McHugh.

She is survived by her loving family: Thomas Wayne McHugh, Mary E. "Libby" Bjornstad (McHugh), Jennifer (Hansen) McHugh, and Lon Bjornstad; grandchildren, Sarah and Emily McHugh and Lonie Bjornstad. She is further survived by Auntie Mar; cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family extends a sincere thank you to the staff at St. Mary's Care Center for the wonderful care they gave to their mother.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association in her name.

A memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2011, at Cress Funeral Home, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison, with Pastor Chris Dolson officiating. A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4:30 p.m. until the time of service.
