Katherine McIlroy Flynn

LEWISTON --
Katherine McIlroy Flynn, 96, a resident of 926 Main St., Lewiston, died at her residence Tuesday morning March 1, surrounded by her family, after a short illness.

She was born in Winthrop Oct. 10, 1908, the daughter of Ronald and Rena (Leadbetter) McIlroy. She attended Winthrop Elementary School and graduated from Jordan High School (Lewiston High School) in the class of 1925. She attended Kents Hill the following year, and then graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston in 1929, where she studied to be a concert pianist.

She married her high school sweetheart, Lawrence "Tubby" Flynn in Lewiston in 1931. In the years that followed, she raised five sons and was employed as an elementary music supervisor for the towns of Monmouth, Leeds, Turner, Buckfield and the city of Lewiston.

She retired from her teaching responsibilities int he early '70s. She spent the early post World War II years raising her family in Monmouth. In the mid-'50s, she returned to Lewiston where she resided for the rest of her life.

She enjoyed her family, playing the piano and writing poetry. She always said her major accomplishment in life was raising her five sons.

Survivors include five sons and their spouses; Lawrence Jr. of Lewiston, Robert and Benita of Auburn, Briane and Jeanne of Auburn, James and Joan of Lewiston, and Thomas and Arlene of Auburn; one sister, Madeline M. Wellman of Auburn; 13 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband; one brother; and two sisters.

Katherine McIlroy Flynn, 96, a resident of 926 Main St., Lewiston, died in Lewiston, March 1, 2005. Private funeral services will be held. Spring burial at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Arrangements by the family owned Dillingham & Son Memorial Chapel & Tribute Center, 62 Spring St., Auburn, 784-6449.
