Dorris E. Welch

RANGELEY -
Dorris Estelle Welch, 85, died at her home in Rangeley Sunday after a long illness.

She was born Dec. 7, 1907 in Madrid, the daughter of Carroll and Verna Leadbetter Knapp. At nine months, she was adopted by an aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. William Dill of Phillips. She graduated from Phillips High School in 1924 and from Farmington Normal School in 1926. She taught schools in Avon, Jay, Weld, and Stratton and did substitute teaching with exceptional children and tutoring for many years in Rangeley. She was a charter member of Rangeley Congregational where she served as deaconess, a member of Parish Council, and organist. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for 61 years, joining in 1932 and serving as organist. She was a member of the Maine Teachers Association, Franklin County Retired Teachers Association, and American Association of Retired People. She married Merle Morgan of Phillips Jan. 14, 1933; he died Feb. 18, 1964. She married Phillip E. Welch of Dixfield, Jan. 20, 1980; he died Dec. 2, 1982.

Mrs. Welch is survived by a son, Terrence A. Morgan of Rangeley; a daughter, Mrs. Meredith A. Harriman of Standish; three sisters, Mrs. Nelda Emery of Kingfield, Mrs. Glenda Worthley of Winthrop and Mrs. Dorothy Flagg of Strong; four step-daughters, one granddaughter and one grandson.
