BASIL D. ARAU

ROCKLAND --
Basil D. Arau, 59, died Oct. 10, 1995 at Winward Gardens in Camden after a courageous struggle with cancer.

He was born in Camden Feb. 16, 1936, the son of Louis V. and Mary (Leadbetter) Arau. Mr. Arau was a 1954 graduate of Camden High School and was a 22- year veteran of the U.S. Navy, which included on year in Vietnam. He retired as a senior chief petty officer. His next career was law enforcement. He spent 15 years in the field between the Rockport Police Department, the Camden Police Department and most recently, the Knox County Sheriff's Department. Not only was he invovled professionaly in the community, he was also a member of several civic organizations, including the Knox County Fish & Game Association, American Legion Post No. 30 of Camden, St. Paul Masonic Lodge and the Naval Fleet Reserve. Mr. Arau loved the community where he grew up and lived most of his years and always tried to help young people. He also was a lover of animals.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Candace Alexander Arau of Rockland; a daughter, Cathleen Harris and her husband James of Great Falls, Va.; a son, Alexander C. Arau and his wife Lana of Warren; his mother-in-law, Alyce Alexander of St. George; three sisters, Beverly McConkey of Houston, Texas, Helen Jones of Warren, and Joan Landwehr of South Hope; two brothers, Leo Arau of Jefferson and Louis Arau of Arizona; several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Peoples United Methodist Church in Union with the Rev. Ralph Miller officiating. Arrangements are with the Carpenter Funeral Home, 306 Broadway, Rockland. There will be no hours of visitation at the funeral home. It is requested that contributions be made to Basal Arau Scholarship Fund, care of Camden-Rockport High School, 34 Knowlton St., Camden 04843.
