John F. Cahill

WORCESTER -
Deacon John F. Cahill, 78, of 14 Stoneleigh Road, a longtime furniture salesman and church deacon, died Wednesday in St. Francis Home after a long illness.

His wife of 54 years, Mary V. (Carroll) Cahill, died last December. He leaves three sons, William F. Cahill of Scottsdale, Ariz., Paul E. Cahill of Southbridge and Patrick J. Cahill of Worcester; four daughters, Mary Anne O'Connell of Ann Arbor, Mich., Jane C. Lisauskas of Wrentham, Elizabeth Cahill of Boston and Margaret M. Cahill of Worcester; a sister, Florence Bryant of Marion, Texas; 10 grandchildren; nephews and nieces.

He was born in Walpole, son of John F. and Dorothy (Prentiss) Cahill, and was raised in Boston. He lived here 37 years.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a lieutenant with the Army Air Forces. He was a pilot and a flight instructor. He then served in the Army Reserve until 1958.

In 1932, at age 13, Mr. Cahill was named Western Union National Telegram Carrier of the Year. He traveled to Washington, D.C., where he received an award from President Herbert H. Hoover.

Mr. Cahill was a factory-sales representative for the Northeast region for Drexel Heritage Furniture Co. for 28 years, retiring in 1982. He previously worked for Allen Furniture Co. in Roslindale.

Mr. Cahill was ordained a deacon in the Roman Catholic Church in 1990, and served at St. George's Church, where he was an active member for many years, including service as a lector. He was a member of the parish's Men's Club, its St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Third Order of St. Francis and the Knights of Columbus.

Mr. Cahill was an avid sailor on Lake Quinsigamond and at Cape Cod, and was past president of the Regatta Point Sailing Club. Mr. Cahill was a skilled woodworker and furniture refinisher.

The funeral will be held Monday from Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., with a con-celebrated Mass at 10 a.m. in St. George's Church, 38 Brattle St. The Most Rev. Daniel P. Reilly, bishop of Worcester, will be the principal celebrant. Burial will be in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. Calling hours are 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, and 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at St. George's Church. The Most Rev. George E. Rueger, Auxiliary Bishop of Worcester, will lead a prayer service at 7 p.m. Sunday at the church. Flowers may be sent, or memorial contributions made to St. George's Church, Scholarship Fund, 40 Brattle St., Worcester 01606.
