1927 - 2001

WEST PARIS --
Donald W. Pray, 73, of West Paris died suddenly at his home Saturday, Sept. 22.

He was born in Lewiston on Nov. 21, 1927, the son of Charles and Gladys Fowler Pray. He attended schools in North and West Paris. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee aboard the USS Kitkun Bay. After World War II, he graduated West Paris High School in 1947.

He married Ruth Herrick on June 29, 1947, they made their home together for 53 years on Route 219 in North Paris. She died Jan. 2. He did some dairy farming and had a team of oxen at one time.

Being independent he built his own house and barn. He grew a beautiful garden every year for many years. He had worked as a union brick layer, also doing carpentry and worked the woods, he retired in 1991.

His many hobbies included restoring antique model T&A cars and old tractors, and a 1946 Taylorcroft. He was a private pilot and member of the oldtimers "club" of Twitchell's airport. He was an avid reader, interested in local history and Alaska in particular, but was also a great one for reciting verse.

He is survived by a son, Alan D. of Mechanic Falls; a daughter, Ellen Green of Anchorage, Alaska; a granddaughter, Hilary Poulin of Lewiston; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth.

PRAY -- Died in West Paris, Sept. 22, 2001, Donald W. Pray, 73, of West Paris. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday Sept. 26 at 1 p.m. at the North Paris Church in West Paris. Interment will be at North Paris Cemetery. Family and friends may attend visiting hours on Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 45 Main St., South Paris.
