Douglas L. Marston, 84, a resident of 200 Stetson Road, Auburn, formerly of Orono and Dover-Foxcroft, died early Thursday morning, May 21, 2009, at Central Maine Medical Center after a long illness.

He was born Nov. 11, 1924, in Rockland, the son of Evan H. and Laura (Small) Marston. Mr. Marston was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving as a gunner/radio operator crewman on a B-24 bomber. His plane was shot down during a mission and served as a prisoner of war in Germany, until allied forces liberated his camp in 1945. After the war, he graduated from Edward Little High School in 1946 where he met his wife, the former Beverly Leadbetter, whom he married April 3, 1948. He also graduated from the University of Maine, Orono, in 1950. After college, he served as a wildlife biologist with the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife with the State of Maine, retiring in 1985. He also began his degree in masonry with Tranquil Lodge, Auburn, and had also served as a former grand master with Masonic Lodge, Milbridge. After retirement, he enjoyed winters traveling to Florida in his travel trailer with his wife, Beverly.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly of Auburn; one son, Stephen D. Marston of Massachusetts; one daughter, Linda Pratt and husband, Owen, of Dover-Foxcroft; one brother, Richard Marston and wife, Janice, of Auburn; and one sister, Marion MacDonald and husband, Dana, of Ocala, Fla. Also surviving are two granddaughters, Kristina Van Den Bosch and husband, John, of Berthoud, Colo., and Emily Flaherty and husband, Noah, of Westbrook.

At Douglas' request there will be no services. Burial will be private at Maine Veterans' Cemetery, Augusta. Arrangements by Dillingham & Son Memorial Chapel, 62 Spring St., Auburn. Memorial donations in Douglas' memory may be made to Greater Androscoggin Humane Society, 55 Strawberry Ave., Lewiston, ME 04240.
