HAZEL D. KENT

FORT FAIRFIELD --
Hazel D. Kent, 82, of Fort Fairfield, wife of the late T. Emery Kent, died early Tuesday morning, Oct. 9, 1990, at the Aroostook Medical Center, Presque Isle, where she had been a patient for the last three weeks and after a short illness.

She was born Jan. 10, 1908 in Carroll, the daughter of Daniel Arnold and Marion Ethel (Larrabee) Durepo. She was a graduate of Limestone High School and the Aroostook State Normal School. At the age of 16, she left Aroostook County to teach school in Rumford in order to help support the family farm after the death of her father. On July 7, 1934, she married Thomas Emery Kent of Fort Fairfield at the Beane's Corner Baptist Church Parsonage in Wilton. Mr. Kent died April 8, 1990. She later taught school in Kingman and Limestone, and for several years was a school teacher in Fort Fairfield.

Mrs. Kent was a life member of the Star Light Rebekah Lodge No. 82, past noble grand and past district deputy president of Rebekah Assembly District No. 30. She received the Decoration of Chivalry, the highest honor given by the IOOF to a Rebekah for outstanding community service and organizational endeavors. Mrs. Kent was also a member of Goodwill Chapter No. 85, Order of Eastern Star, and was a past matron, and a member of the Past Matrons Club. Throughout the years, she had served the Order by holding every office at different times. She was a former member of the Maine Teachers Association, the National Education Association, the Hospital Guild, Philomathean Club, Nordica Club, the Onset Club, and was a member of the Sunshine Club. She was a former member of the Fort Fairfield PTA and the Band Association, and was an honorary Girl Scout Leader.

After her retirement from teaching, she tutored many students, and will be remembered for her influence on their lives. Mrs. Kent enjoyed crocheting and reading, and in her later years maintained an active interest in the activities of her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by one son, Thomas F. Kent of Madawaska; two daughters, Roma Lou Kent Wiles, and her husband, Gerald E. Wiles of Wilton, and Betty Ann Kent of Fort Fairfield; three grandchildren, T. Scott Kent of Madawaska, Rhonda Wiles-Rosell, and her husband, Kurt, of Jay, and Kent Wiles of Wilson; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers, Carroll Durepo, Claude Durepo and Jasper Durepo; and a sister, Mrs. Marion Theriault.

Family and friends are invited to call 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Dorsey Funeral Home, 44 Lower Main St., Fort Fairfield, where pubic OES services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. At the conclusion of the funeral service, there will be a public Rebekah memorial service. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield.
