CLIF GREGORY, 84, CIVIL WAR VETERAN, DIES

Was Last Survivor of Co. I of Seventh Minnesota Inf., Served 3 Years -- THIRD VETERAN TO DIE WITHIN WEEK IN COUNTY -- Born in Vermont, Came to State 72 Years Ago To Settle In Le Sauk Town

Clifton B. Gregory, last surviving member of Company I, Seventh Minnesota Infantry, of which the deceased J.E. West was captain and Governor Marshall, colonel, died at 6:30 this morning at the age of 84 years. He had been ailing for some time, his death caused by infirmities of age.

Mr. Gregory was born in Essex County, Vermont, October 30, 1843. His father passed away in 1853 and as a boy he came to Minnesota with his mother in 1856 and settled in Le Sauk township. He joined the army in 1861 and served three years and one day, after which he received his honorable discharge. Mr. Gregory married Miss Lena O. Anderson who passed away in 1910. They had eight children, five of whom survive: Daniel C., living at the home farm in Brockway; Benjamin Y. in Spokane; Mrs. John West, Auburn, Wash.; Mrs. Joseph Fall, Glenwood; Mrs. Louise Koch, St. Cloud. Funeral arrangements await word from distant relatives. The remains will be held at the Sivinski parlors.

Mr. Gregory is the third Civil War veteran to die in Stearns County this week. Leonard Thielman, pioneer hardware dealer, who came to St. Cloud shortly after the war, died at his home here Monday. His funeral will be conducted tomorrow morning with services at nine o'clock at the Cathedral.

Cassius M. Sprague, a pioneer of Sauk Center and prominent in central Minnesota financial circles, a Civil War veteran, died Tuesday morning.

Distinction came to Mr. Gregory as the last survivor of Co. I, which was recruited in St. Cloud. Mr. Thielman's distinction as a Civil War veteran lay in the fact that he was the only member of the St. Cloud post of the Grand Army of the Republic who served in the Navy.

They were highly esteemed, as are the other remaining members of the rapidly diminishing group of me endeared in the hearts of the people as the "old settlers."
