President of GOP Federation Dies

Mrs. Leslie MacMullen of Coronado Succumbs After Illness of Several Months

CORONADO -- Mrs. Leslie MacMullen, 63, president of the Republican Women's Federation of San Diego County, died here early yesterday after an illness of several months. She was the wife of Col. J.D. MacMullen, USA, ret. and lived at 382 Glorietta Blvd. Services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 in Christ Episcopal Church, Ninth and C Sts., with the Rev. W. Don Brown, pastor, officiating, assisted by Dr. Frank Lowe, San Diego.

Mrs. MacMullen was a member of the Republican County Central Committee, and a past president of the Coronado Wome's GOP Club. She was born in London, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Leslie Ogilvie. After schooling in England and Germany, she came to the United States in 1912. While visiting in Boston in 1917, she met and was married to Col. MacMullen who was then organizing an artillery regimet for overseas duty.

When he left for Europe, Mrs. MacMullen came to San Diego in June 1918 to live with her husband's parents, Mr. and Mrs. James MacMullen. James MacMullen then was publisher of The San Diego Union and Evening Tribune. Mrs. Leslie MacMullen followed her husband on army duty later and returned to this area in 1944 when the colonel was assigned to Camp Callan and remained here thereafter.

She entered politics as a precinct captain in Coronado.

In addition to Col. MacMullen, she is survived by three children, James Leslie MacMullen, now in the radiation laboratory at Berkeley; Margaret MacMullen, of Coronado, and Mrs. Joan Weinstein, of Fairfax County, Virginia.

Ethel married Col. James D. MacMullen about 1917 in Massachusetts. (Col. James D. MacMullen was born 20 August 1890 in New Jersey ⁸⁶⁸⁸ and died 29 March 1964 in San Diego County, California ⁸⁶⁸⁹.)
