2 Dead, Three Badly Injured In Rock Slide

Renovo, Pa., Oct. 17 -
An avalanche thundered down Hymer mountain near here tonight, killing two persons and injuring three others seriously.

An automobile carrying the five victims was buried under tons of rock and dirt when a section of the mountain tore loose and plunged through the darkness across highway 220 six miles east of here.

The dead were Mrs. John Paul, thirty, and Walter Resch, Frank Herritt, twenty-nine, and Gerald Johnson, taken to a hospital in Lock Haven, suffered fractures and internal injuries. Attaches said their condition was critical. John Paul, thirty-four, suffered a dislocated hip, bruises and other injuries. His condition was serious. All five were from Renovo.

The party was en-route to Williamsport along the scenic mountain highway. The avalanche occurred at Falling Springs Bridge, where the mountainside was virtually perpendicular to the road.

The great cliff, rainsoaked for several days, fell without warning. Hundreds of tons of rock completely blocked the highway.

The mountain is part of the Bald Eagle range.
