A close friend told Alice of a baby ten weeks old who was to be given up by her parents. When Dr. Alice went to see the child, the baby held out its arms to her as she leaned over the crib.

Mary Louise, as she came to be known, was christened at the Church of the Ephiphany by father J.H. Hopkins. She wore the same dress the rest of the Wynekoop children wore at their christenings -- a little frock made by their mother from her wedding gown.

One late summer, Mary stayed with a friend in Crystal Lake, Michigan, whose family was from Detroit. Soon her hostess became ill and they both started home. The day after Mary reached Chicago, word came that her friend from Detroit died of infantile paralysis. The day after that, Mary went to bed with the same disease. A couple months later, Mary was frail but able to come down the stairs and still troubled by her bad heart. In March, Mary finally surrendered to her poor weak heart.
