Pearl Waller

Pearl Hanby Waller, 94, of Portland, a former Baker County resident, died Aug. 20, 2010, at the Providence Portland Medical Center.

Her funeral was Friday at the Wilhelm Portland Memorial Funeral Home.

Pearl was born on Nov. 9, 1915, at Baker City to Walter and Alice Boyer Hanby. She spent her youth on the family ranch in Sumpter Valley learning to be resourceful and self- sufficient.

She married Floyd Hesner. They had one child, Barbara Jean, who died shortly after birth.

Pearl moved to Portland to work in the shipyards during World War II, then hired on with North Coast Electric as a bookkeeper.

Pearl married Jack Waller on Oct. 2, 1949. They made yearly fishing trips to Canada. She loved dancing, making crafts and baked goods for the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Elks Lodge, watching "Dancing with the Stars," playing Keno and sharing her pies and jam.

Pearl lived in her own home, driving until the age of 93, tending to her garden and birds and keeping up with her many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.

She felt honored to have her great-great-niece named after her, Emma Pearl Marrs. Pearl was a faithful member of Savage Memorial Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alice Boyer and Walter Hanby; her husband, Jack Waller of Portland; her sister, Rachel Hudspeth Daly; her brother, Hardin; and her nephew, Bill Hudspeth.

Survivors include nieces, Jean Marrs of Portland, Mary "Babe" Thompson of Pendleton, Sharon Daly Solseng of Seattle, Wash., Joyce Runyan Daly Pierson of Spokane, Wash., and Betty Waller Nielson, and nephews, Dan and David Bushnell, all of Portland.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Gateway Elks Lodge Eye Clinic Fund, 711 N.E. 100th St., Portland, OR 97220.
