F. Dale Speed

PRINCETON -
Surrounded by loved ones, Dale Speed slipped quietly into heaven from the arms of his loving wife, Joanne, Dec. 27, 2011.

Dale was born July 12, 1929, on the North Road, Lee, the son of Clyde and Lila Speed. He graduated from Lee Academy in 1947 and attended the University of Maine, Orono. He joined the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. After being discharged he worked in the woods and then joined the Inland Fish and Game Department July 13, 1953. He was appointed postmaster of Princeton post office in September 1964, and retired from that job in February 1992.

Dale was a civic leader, serving on numerous boards and committees. He belonged to Lewy's Island Lodge No. 138, St. Croix Chapter No. 17 Royal Arch Masons, Hugh DePayens Commandry No. 15, Anah Temple, Schoodic Shrine Club, American Legion and Charlotte County Shrine Club. He served as a district deputy grand master and was a founding member of Princeton Rod and Gun Club. He was appointed to St. Croix International Waterway Commission and served four terms on the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Council.

In later years Dale fought through ill health and great pain, all the while saying that he was feeling "great." A wonderful husband, father and grandfather, he was brave, courageous, caring, strong, thoughtful and a true leader. He was the best of the best and he was our hero. He made a difference.

Those he leaves behind include his wife of 60 years, Joanne L. (Ham) Speed; their son, Eric Speed and wife, Sandra, grandson, Mark Speed and wife, Alyssa, great-grandchildren, Jamison, Kallen and Landrie, granddaughter, Jennifer Stonehocker and husband, Brandon, all of Texas; their daughter, Suellen D. Speed of Ellsworth; their son, Jon Speed of Princeton, granddaughter, Erika Speed and friend, Tony Young, and great-grandson, Declan, all of Rockland; his grandson, Andrew Speed and wife, Lori, of Saco; and his grandson, Benjamin Speed and wife, Sarina, and great-grandchildren, Noah and Larkin, all of Franklin. He also leaves his brother, Glen Speed and wife, Joyce; a sister, Grace Ann Bowers and husband, Glendon; an aunt, Betty Lancaster; several cousins, nieces and nephews, and many special friends.

Those who greeted him in heaven include his mother and father; a brother and a sister; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Eric and Eula Ham; brother-in-law, Rodney Ham; Suellen's partner, Robert Hamblen; several aunts, uncles, cousins, two nieces, a nephew and several special friends.

A memorial service in Dale's honor will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, at Princeton Rod and Gun Club. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Shriner's Burn and Orthopedic units, care of Anah Shrine Office, P.O. Box 735, Bangor, ME 04401-0735.
