Gordon (Lyle) Howell

Gordon (Lyle) Howell, 81, of Viola, died peacefully Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 8, 2012, at his home.

Lyle was born May 17, 1930, at Avon to Ralph A. and Edith A. Grimes Howell. He grew up and went to school at Avon and graduated from Deary High School. He attended the University of Idaho for a time and began his career with Inland Motor Freight. He joined the U.S. Army, serving from 1951-54, and was stationed in Germany for a time.

Following his discharge, Lyle returned to Inland Motor Freight, later becoming Garrett Freight Lines, then ANR Freight Systems. Lyle retired from there as office manager after 37 years with the company.

He enjoyed traveling, cooking and helping others. He was an active member of the non-denominational church, had a strong faith and being of service to God.

Lyle and Jamie Hughes were married June 14, 1959, in Moscow. She resides at their home at Viola. Also surviving are his children, Kym and Vivian Howell of Superior, Ariz., Edee and Ray Zweifelhofer of Phoenix, Kevin and Marla Howell of Central Point, Ore., and Dodee Howell of Viola; his grandchildren, Ashlyn and Bryce Walker, Ryan Zwiefelhofer, Zac Howell, Sarah Howell, Lance Howell and Kaili Howell; a sister-in-law, Arlene Howell; and many other friends and relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Dave Bennett; a brother, Marvin Howell; and a grandson, Dustin Schierman.

The memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Paradise Hills Church of God, 510 Northwood Drive, Moscow. A covered-dish dinner will follow in the church fellowship hall. A private committal service and urn placement will be later at the Viola Cemetery.

The family suggests that memorials be made to The Idaho Youth Ranch.
