ROBERT MONTGOMERY, CONSERVATIONIST

Robert Montgomery, retired regional manager of the state Department of Fish and Game, area Boy Scout activist and former Sacramento resident, died Jan. 22 of lung cancer. He was 82.

Mr. Montgomery, who managed two of the state's conservation regions beginning with a 17-year tenure in Sacramento, died in his Lake San Marcos home.

He came to Sacramento in 1952 to head the newly organized agency's Northern California region. He oversaw the protection of Feather River fisheries and created a hatchery to soften the effect of the Oroville Dam.

In 1969, he was transferred to Long Beach, where he stayed until his retirement in 1986.

Mr. Montgomery received a bachelor's degree in wildlife management and forestry from the University of Minnesota and a master's degree in wildlife conservation from the University of Maine.

During World War II, he served in the Army, earning the rank of lieutenant colonel.

Before coming to California, Mr. Montgomery was a district supervisor for the Michigan Department of Conservation.

While living in Sacramento, he spent countless hours working with local Boy Scouts troops, particularly in the Golden Empire Council. A 41-year member of the Boy Scouts, he helped create the Camp Winton and Loon Lake Camp, and was given the Silver Beaver, the Boy Scout's highest adult award.

Mr. Montgomery was preceded in death by his wife, Doreen. Survivors include sons Douglas of London, England, Robert Jr. of Austerlitz, N.Y., and Stephen of Grosse Pointe, Mich.; a brother, Joseph of Sacramento; and five grandchildren.

Remembrances can be sent to the Boy Scouts of America, Golden Empire Council, 251 Commerce Circle, Sacramento 95815 or the California Wildlife Foundation, P.O. Box 189577, Sacramento 95818.
