RONALD SCOTT BRAND, 80, UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR

EASTFORD, Conn. -
Ronald Scott Brand, 80, of Eastford, a professor emeritus of mechanical engineering, died Friday, Nov. 19, in University of Massachusetts Hospital, Worcester, after a short illness.

He leaves his wife of 59 years, Rachael (Sanborn) Brand; two sons, Douglas L. Brand of Mount Sinai, N.Y., and Thomas S. Brand of East Setauket, N.Y.; a daughter, Margaret E. Brand of Greenwich, Conn.; and five grandchildren. He was born in Springfield, son of John and Minnie (Robertson) Brand, and was raised in Worcester and lived many years in Eastford. He graduated from Classical High School, Worcester, in 1936 and Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1940.

At WPI, he played varsity soccer and tennis. He earned a master's degree from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1950 and a Ph.D. in applied mathematics from Brown University, Providence, in 1960.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Brand was a professor in the department of mechanical engineering at the University of Connecticut at Storrs, where he taught for 33 years. He retired in 1979. He was chairman of that department from 1970 to 1976 and director of academic planning for UConn from 1976 to 1979.

Mr. Brand was a longtime member and former chairman of the Eastford Board of Education, and was town treasurer for eight years.

Mr. Brand was a founding member of the Unitarian Fellowship of Northeastern Connecticut and later a member of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Brooklyn, Conn. He was a member of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He was a rose gardener, and a member and past president of the Connecticut Rose Society.

A memorial service was held Monday, Nov. 21, in the Unitarian Universalist Society of Brooklyn, Routes 6 and 169, Brooklyn, Conn. After cremation, burial will be in Grove Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Eastford Public Library, Eastford, CT 06242; or the University of Connecticut Foundation, UConn, Storrs, CT 06268. Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove St., Putnam, is directing arrangements.
