DERWOOD C. BEMIS

HOLDEN - Derwood C. Bemis, 77, husband of Jennie M. (Knowlton) Bemis, died April 10, 2005, at his home in Holden. He was born July 14, 1927 in Bangor, the son of Frank O. and Marion (Cook) Bemis.

Derwood was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and worked for Sanborn Motor Express as terminal manager for 26 years and later retired from Coles Express. He was also a 50 year member of the Composite Lodge, No. 169 AF & AM Lagrange.

In addition to his wife of Holden, Derwood is survived by two sons, Gregory A. Bemis of Holden and Jeffrey C. Bemis, and his wife, Susan, of Wilmington, Del.; a grandson, Dylan V. Bemis; one brother, Kendall Bemis and his wife, Gretchen, of Malone, N.Y.; and one sister, Donna (Bemis) Brown of Capistrano Beach, Calif.; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Audrey (Knowlen) Bemis. He will be greatly missed by his dog, Penny; and his cats, Coki and especially Tuffy, who was adopted from the Bangor Humane Society.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at the Grace Bible Church, corner of Route 1A and Route 46, Holden, with the Rev. Greg Selmon, pastor, and the Rev. Peter Sprague, officiating. A reception at the church for family and friends will immediately follow. Burial later in the spring will be at Rowe Cemetery, Holden. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Bangor Humane Society, 693 B, Mt. Hope Avenue, Bangor 04401, or to the Hammond Street Senior Center, 2 Hammond Street, Bangor 04401. Arrangements by Kiley Funeral Home, 69 State St., Brewer.

• He appeared on the census in 1940 at 31 Mill Street in LaGrange, Penobscot County, Maine. He lived in the household of his parents. A primary school teacher named Winona Flanders boarded in the home as well.

• He had a residence in East Holden, Penobscot County, Maine.

Derwood married Audrey Joan Knowlen, daughter of Ervin L. Knowlen and Helen Rowe. (Audrey Joan Knowlen was born 2 September 1932 in Bangor, Penobscot County, Maine, died 17 October 1990 in Bangor, Penobscot County, Maine ¹⁰⁰⁴³ and was buried after 17 October 1990 in Holden, Penobscot County, Maine at Rowe Cemetery.)

Derwood next married Jennie Mae Knowlton, daughter of Raymond H. Knowlton Sr. and Donna B.
