Single Seniors Encounter Special Dating Woes by Nancy Garland [excerpted]
Earl Tibbetts, 73, of the Dexter-Garland area, met his second wife the old fashioned way -- he was set up by a relative.
In 1993, about a year after his first wife died, his octogenarian aunt gave him the telephone number of Shirley Sewall, 74, of Levant. Sick of being alone, Tibbetts called her, but Sewall, who has eight grown children, refused to meet him without his aunt being present.
Many women today are "a bit skittish" regarding romance, according to Tibbetts. When it comes right down to it, they're like a young girl of 16. Once they cross over the bridge, it's all right," Tibbetts said.
Tibbetts, his match-making aunt and Sewall eventually had dinner at a restaurant. "We just sat down and talked for a long time," Tibbetts said.
Several weeks later, Tibbetts and Sewall moved in together. They got married soon afterward.
Tibbetts said he realizes his good fortune in finding love again at his age. He and his new wife "get along fine." Tibbetts said. "Life is better married."
