MASHPEE \emdash Gerald L. Joyner, 59, a resident of Mashpee for 22 years, died at his home on June 10, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Constance; five sons, Nathan and wife Ashley of Franklin, Matthew and Kyle of Hyannis, Kalum of Boxboro, and Jeremy and wife Susanna of Los Angeles, Calif.; mother, Patricia Joyner of Columbia, S.C.; four brothers, John and wife Frances of Elburn, Ill., Jeff and wife Lisa of Lexington, S.C., Joel and wife Sally of Elburn, Ill., and Jim of Lexington, S.C.; and seven grandchildren, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his father, Frank, and sister, Pamela Olson.
Jerry was in the Navy for four years and was a Vietnam veteran. He was retired from the Army Corps of Engineers with more than 28 years of service as a small craft operator. He assisted more than 280 vessels that were in distress in the Cape Cod Canal. He also volunteered as one of the first crews of 9/11 as a first responder in New York City and went to the aid of Gulf Coast residents during recovery efforts for Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
He was a loving and devoted husband and father, and a true hero to his country, family and friends.
His life will be celebrated at a memorial service on Monday, June 15, at the Bourne United Methodist Church, Sandwich Road, Bourne, at 11 a.m.
