THELMA A.M. CHILDS
LEWISTON - Thelma A. MacKenzie Childs, 87, formerly of Meadowville Apartments, died Sunday, June 6, at Montello Manor Nursing Home after a short illness.
She was born in Brighton, Mass., July 14, 1911, the daughter of Wilton C. and Jessie (Fish) MacKenzie. She was brought up in Brighton and attended school there. She spent her summers in Wayne, at her grandparents farm, Charles and Hannah (Ridley) Fish.
She was married to John W. Childs, Sr. who died in 1987. They lived in Cambridge, Mass. for several years and then bought a home in Manchester, where they raised their family. They owned and operated the Birchmere Kennels for many years, and raised AKC registered Beagles, Cockerspaniels, and Bloodhounds. They were well known at the Field Trial Circuit throughout the state. She also helped her husband train horses. She enjoyed her family, gardening, cooking and her constant companion, her little dog Rusty.
She is survived by one sister, Pearl Fosberg of Walpole, Mass.; four sons, John, Jr. of Lewiston, Ernest E. of Norfolk, Va., Joseph W. of Buckfield, and William S. of Litchfield; one daughter, Jacqueline Kane and her husband Fay of Scarborough; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one daughter, Sade Jean in 1944.
DIED - In Lewiston, June 6, 1999, Thelma A. McKenzie Childs, 87, of Lewiston. Memorial services Saturday 2 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial at Manchester Cemetery, Manchester, Me. Arrangements by Dillingham & Son Memorial Chapel.
