YORK BEACH, Maine -- Harold Roy Knowles, 83, died Monday, Aug. 15. He was the husband of Ellen Knowles, who died in 1998.
He was born in Bridgeport, Conn., son of the late George and Rose (Roy) Knowles. He was educated in Medford. He lived in Massachusetts until 1989, when he retired to York Beach with his wife.
During World War II, Mr. Knowles served in the Navy on the destroyer escort, USS Wyffels, having attained the rank of chief petty officer.
He worked for Pezrow Enterprises. He also owned Barney's Deli in Lowell.
He was a charter member and executive officer of the Lion's Club in Billerica.
Mr. Knowles enjoyed traveling with his wife.
He is survived by six children and their spouses, Jane and Paul C. Lindsey of Lafayette, Calif., Stephen and Katherine Knowles of Tarpon Springs, Fla., David and Jill Knowles of York, Mark and Tracy Knowles of York, William and Andrea Knowles of Billerica, and Paul and Sylvia Knowles of Chicopee; 14 grandchildren, Chris and Paul Lindsey, both of Lafayette, Calif., Abraham Knowles of Tampa, Fla., Gabriel Knowles of Lexington, Ky., Davis and Dana Knowles, both of Haleiwa, Hawaii, Sarah Knowles of Brooklyn, N.Y., Stephanie Knowles of Chicopee, Erica Knowles of Brooklyn, N.Y., Evan Knowles of Boston's Jamaica Plain, Olivia, Michell, Georgianna and Katelyn Knowles of York; three great-grandchildren, Alexander and Rachel Knowles, both of Tampa, Fla., and Zion Knowles of Haleiwa, Hawaii.
