Mrs. Burnham E. Sewell

LINCOLN -
Willa (Stewart) Sewell, 88, wife of the late Dr. Burnham E. Sewell, died March 12, 1989, at a Bangor hospital.

She was born at Linneus, June 16, 1900, the daughter of Daniel and Mary (Adams) Stewart. She attended grade schools in Linneus. She graduated from Ricker Classical Institute, Houlton, in 1918, and Nasson College, Springvale in 1922 as a home economics major.

On Dec. 25, 1922, she was married to Dr. Burnham E. Sewell and came to Lincoln to live. She was a member of the First Congregational Church, U.C.C., of Lincoln. She taught Sunday school for several years, was leader of the Youth Fellowship Group at the church, was a member of the Ladies Guild for over 50 years and a past president and member of its advisory board. She was a member and past matron of the Lincoln Chapter No. 112, O.E.S., serving as its treasurer for several years and was also a member of the O.E.S. Finance Committee. Mrs. Sewell and her husband were instrumental in organizing the Rainbow for Girls in Lincoln in 1949 and served on the advisory board for 25 years. She received the Grand Cross of Color. She was a member and past president of the Lee Literary Club.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Mary Carolyn) G. Bacon of Hampden and Mrs. Fletcher (Florence) W. Lindsay of Portland; five grandchildren, Dr. Judith Willa Bacon of Morgantown, W. Va., George Sewell Bacon of Beverly Hills, Fla., Fletcher W. Lindsay, II of Portland, Brian Sewell Lindsay of Portland and Sandra Jean Lindsay of Portland; four great-grandchildren, Mary Ellen Katrina Bacon of Lecanto, Fla., David Burnham Bacon Williams of Morgantown, W. Va., Nicole Ann Lindsay of Portland and Kayla Marie Lindsay of Portland; several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call 2-4 and 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Clay, Stevens & Clay Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Lynn Bujnak officiating. Spring burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Dr. Burnahm E. Sewell Memorial Scholarship Fund. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.
