"Joplin-Neosho train wreck of 1914 recalled"

Tulsa, Okla., Aug 17 - Aug. 5, 1914, two trains collided on the Kansas City southern railway near Neosho, setting fire to and burning a motor car full of excursionists bound from Neosho to Joplin. The motor car was operated by gasoline on the tracks, fifty-two persons burning to death when this car caught fire.

Picture caption: On the night of Aug. 5, 1914, a horrific train accident occurred near Tipton Ford. A Missouri & North Arkansas motor car and a Kansas City southern passenger train collided. A majority of the passengers were burned to death because they could not extricate themselves from the wreckage. Some of the victims were Neosho residents returning home from an excursion to Carthage after attending an Emancipation Day celebration. In the end, only 38 bodies were identified but the exact number of deaths was never fully determined because of the uncertainty of the passenger list.
