Frank H. Speed

In the real estate and insurance business, Frank H. Speed is a prominent figure in Millinocket, where he holds the position of president and manager of the Millinocket Insurance Agency. He has been engaged in this type of work since 1910, before which he was employed by the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad. He was born in Maine and has spent most of his life in the State, with the result that he is thoroughly familiar with industrial conditions here and with the people themselves. He was regarded so highly in business circles in the town that he was made the first president of the Millinocket Chamber of Commerce. A public spirited citizen, keenly interested in the affairs of his town, he is especially active in fraternal and organizational work in his community.

Mr. Speed was born in Lagrange, Maine on July 26, 1887, the son of of Perley E. Speed, a native of Bradford, Maine, who was a merchant until his death in 1926, and of Alice M. (Carey) Speed, also a native of Lagrange who is living. Frank H. Speed attended the public schools of Lagrange and then became a student of Doe's Business College in Bangor. When he completed his education, he went to work as a river driver for four years, between the ages of thirteen and and seventeen years. Then he was employed by the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad, for which company he spent three years firing a locomotive. In 1910, he came to Millinocket, where he went into the real estate and insurance business for himself, a line of work which he continued since that time, as president and manager of Millinocket Insurance Company. He was first president of the local Chamber of Commerce, and is a director and trustee of the Millinocket Masonic Association. He belongs to several fraternal orders, including the Free and Accepted Masons, in which he is affiliated with the Nollesemic Lodge, the Katahdin Chapter, all bodies of the Scottish Rite, including the Maine Consistory, Anah Temple of the Shrine, and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, in which he holds a membership in Millinocket Lodge, and the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows, in which he is affiliated with the Millinocket Lodge. He also is a member of the Order of Eastern Star in the Masonic Order. In his political opinions he is a Republican and served as secretary of the Republican Town Committee. His favorite hobbies are fishing and gardening. He is a member of the Baptist Church of Millinocket, of which he is treasurer and chairman of the board of trustees.

In 1914, Frank H. Speed married Lena Comstock, a native of Argyle, Maine and they are the parents of Robert Edward Comstock Speed.
