Guy Pigeon, 87, Ex-President of Spar Making Firm
Guy Pigeon, of 41 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, former president of the last of Boston's spar making firms, died yesterday at the Elmhurst Nursing Home, Melrose. He was 87.
He was president of the Pigeon Hollow Spar Co. of East Boston, a family concern founded in 1830 by his grandfather. He retired three years ago.
Henry Pigeon, the firm's founder, built spars for square riggers and clipper ships. His son built spars for the America's Cup defenders until they began to use metal spars.
Guy Pigeon made spars for pilot boats, fishermen and for "Freedom," the U.S. Naval Academy training schooners at Annapolis. Under Guy Pigeon, the spar making business also produced flagpoles.
Born in East Boston, Mr. Pigeon was a member of the Balbec Lodge of Masons.
He leaves his wife, Claire F. (Farren); a son, Ernest W. of Melrose, and a daughter, Mrs. Janet C. Barry of Saugus.
Services will be at St. John's Episcopal Church, Winthrop, tomorrow at 11 a.m.
