After graduation from Norway High School and Wilfred Academy of Design in Boston, Mass., Arlene managed a salon on Nantucket Island. In 1937 she returned to her hometown of Norway to open her own salon.

Arlene was an active member of the San Luis Obispo community. Her volunteer work included RSVP, Red Cross, Literacy Council, Sinsheimer Elementary School, and serving as a deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of San Luis Obispo.
