Walter O. Hodsdon, Sr.
1906 - 1998

SCARBOROUGH --
Walter O. Hodsdon, Sr., 92, of Higgins Beach, formerly of Lewiston-Auburn, died Saturday April 11, at a Scarborough nursing center.

Born Feb. 13, 1906 at Watertown, Mass., the son of Albion and Hattie Brewster Hodsdon, his mother died when he was two weeks old and he was raised by John Converse and Hattie Hodsdon Estes. He grew up in the Lewiston-Auburn area.

Mr. Hodsdon graduated from Edward Little High School in 1925 and Bates College in 1929. While attending Bates College, he was on the debating team and was a member of the College Key.

Following his graduation, he was hired as a chemist by Bell Laboratories at New York City in August of 1929. To keep his job with Bell Labs during the Depression, he went to New York Law School nights and upon graduation in 1934, he joined the Patent Department at Bell Labs. He was hired by Eastman Kodak Company of Rochester, N.Y., in 1936, where he managed the Kodak Park Work Section Patent Department where he remained until his retirement in 1971.

During World War II, Mr. Hodsdon worked on the Manhatten Project. He was at Berkeley, Calif. for six months and spent the remainder of the war at Oakridge, Tenn. as the assistant to the Works Manager. After the war he returned to Eastman Kodak.

He was an avid Trap shooter, where he gained the distinction of being the New York State Champion in the 1950s. He also attended trap shoots while vacationing in Maine. He was a member of the two clubs in the Rochester area. In later years, he went to the clubs to play pool and became quite proficient.

Mr. Hodsdon was married to the former Meredyth Carolyn Wellman from Auburn in 1931 [sic] and she died in 1991.

Survivors include one son, Walter O. Hodsdon, Jr. of Crystal River, Fla.; one daughter, Valerie Knight of Scarborough, with whom he had made his home; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
