Former Republican legislator John Telow of Lewiston dies
LEWISTON - John Telow, a former Republican legislator who represented this Democratic stronghold for a decade, died Tuesday following a long illness. He was 85.
Telow, who served in the Maine House of Representatives from 1980 to 1990, was the first GOP lawmaker elected from Lewiston since 1902.
His wife, Hope, characterized him as a moderate Republican who did not simply follow the party line. His success stemmed in part from the support of his many friends and his love of campaigning, she said.
"John Telow was a great gentleman," said Gregory Nadeau, a senior policy adviser to Gov. Angus King who served with Telow in the House. "He was one of those individuals who always had a kind word and just a terrific outlook."
Telow was diagnosed with cancer five years ago and underwent surgery. He was left weak after the ordeal and came down with pneumonia several times in recent months, his wife said.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons and three daughters.
A funeral will be held Friday at the Fortin Grou-Teague Funeral Home in Auburn.
John married Hope Elaine Leadbetter, daughter of Charles Frederic Leadbetter and Eunice M. Luce, in 1948 7346.,7347 (Hope Elaine Leadbetter was born 4 October 1924 in Belfast, Waldo County, Maine 7346 and died 24 November 2010 in Lewiston, Androscoggin County, Maine 7346.)
