Cause of his death was mortar shell which hit him in the chest.

.... mortar shell, which hit in him the chest during an offensive attack in which his company participated. The attack was made in the vicinity of Ottmaring, Germany on April 26th, where Sgt. Wheaton was leading his squad.
Sgt. Wheaton was buried in Nurnberg, Germany. His funeral service was held in two parts. One with his fellow soldiers and officers of his company. The second part was the committal service at the grave in an American cemetery in Nurnberg, Germany. His commanding officer informed his relatives that his funeral was in keeping with that of a Christian and was conducted by a Protestant chaplain.
Sgt. Wheaton leaves his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Wheaton, of Passadumkeag; three brothers, Douglas of Brookton, Archie of Wiscasset, and Pvt. Freese in an Army hospital in England.
He leaves also four sisters, Mrs. Hawley Thornton, Mrs. Ralph Davis of Brookton, Mrs. Glenn Pressley of Lubec, and Mrs. Harry Walker, Jr. of this town.
He also leaves his wife, Mrs. Esther Wheaton and two children, Lorraine and Robert, of Lagrange.
Sgt. Wheaton was born June 29, 1919 at Forrest. Later he moved with his parents to Lincoln where he attended the public schools, graduating from Mattanawcook High School in June 1937. He took a prominent part in all athletics and was fond of fishing and hunting. He made many friends wherever he went and possessed a pleasing personality. When Sgt. Wheaton moved to Passadumkeag, he married on June 5, 1938, Esther Grace Bishop of Lagrange.
Sgt. Wheaton was engaged in defense work as a welder, previous to his induction in the Army and was employed at the Bath Iron Works.
He took his infantry training at Fort McClellan, Alabama. Was home on furlough at Christmas 1944, went back to Fort Meade, Md. and was sent overseas in Jan. 1945. He was in France, Belgium and Germany. He fought in the 394th Infantry, Co. F 99th Division of the 1st American Army.
