Charles Austin Hutchins
PENOBSCOT - Charles Austin Hutchins, 73, died April 17, 2003 at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, following a long illness. He was born Sept. 23, 1929, in Penobscot, the son of Lloyd and Marguerite (Perkins) Hutchins.
He graduated in 1947 from Clark High School in Penobscot. He served in the U.S. Navy as an engine man. Immediately following his discharge he returned to Penobscot and lived on the farm where he was born until his death. He was employed for 36 years by St. Regis/Champion Paper Co. in Bucksport, retiring in 1987. Charles was a self taught craftsman and prior to his retirement, while still working at the mill, built virtually single-handedly, his own home on the site of the original family homestead. He loved spending his summers gardening and haying and his winters cutting pulpwood, firewood, and logs which he had milled to provide most of the lumber he used to build his home.
He will be dearly missed by his wife of 55 years, Georgia of Penobscot; his daughters, Cheryl Hutchins and her husband, Benjamin Long, of Vienna, Va., and Carla Hutchins of Carmel; his brother, Hoyt Hutchins and his wife, Pauline, of Penobscot; several nieces, nephews, cousins and innumerable friends. He was predeceased by his parents; and two brothers, Lloyd Hutchins, Jr. and Berwyn Hutchins, both of whom also lived in Penobscot.
At his request, there will be no funeral. Gifts in his memory may be sent to CancerCare of Maine, care of Eastern Maine Charities, PO Box 404, Bangor, ME 04402-0404, or Hancock County HomeCare, 57 Water Street, Blue Hill, ME 04614. Arrangements by Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, Bucksport.
